PM Modi to Inaugurate Maruti Suzuki’s Electric Car and Battery Manufacturing Plant

A landmark move for India’s push towards electric mobility.

In a landmark move for India’s push towards electric mobility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate Maruti Suzuki’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility and a new lithium-ion battery plant in Hansalpur, Gujarat. This event, scheduled for tomorrow, August 26, 2025, marks a pivotal moment for both the company and the country’s automotive industry.

The “Made-in-India” EV Goes Global

The new plant will be the production hub for Maruti Suzuki’s much-anticipated electric SUV, the e Vitara. This vehicle, which made its public debut at the Bharat Mobility Global 2025 earlier this year, is not just for the Indian market. In a significant strategic decision, the made-in-India e Vitara will be exported to over 100 countries, including advanced markets like Europe and Japan. This move solidifies India’s growing role as a global manufacturing and export hub for electric vehicles.

The inauguration will also include the start of localized production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant. This facility, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, is a major step toward making India “Aatmanirbhar” (self-reliant) in the field of green energy. With this development, over 80% of the battery value chain will be manufactured within India, boosting domestic production and innovation.

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara: A Deep Dive into Specs and Features

The e Vitara is designed to be a significant player in the Indian EV market. It will be offered with two battery pack options: a 49 kWh pack and a larger 61 kWh pack. The smaller battery is expected to provide a WLTP-certified range of 346 km, while the larger one could offer up to 428 km of range in a single-motor, front-wheel-drive configuration. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant with the 61 kWh battery is also on offer, with a range of 412 km.

On the design front, the e Vitara retains a muscular and futuristic SUV stance. It features three-point matrix LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, and distinctive piano-black accents. The rear boasts revamped LED taillights connected by a black strip, and the entire vehicle is sold under the premium NEXA brand.

Inside, the cabin is a significant departure for Maruti Suzuki, featuring a dual-tone brown and black color scheme. The dashboard is modern and tech-focused, with a large 10.1-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The car is packed with premium features, including:

Convenience

  • Ventilated front seats
  • 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Fixed glass roof

Safety

  • Comprehensive suite of seven airbags
  • 360-degree camera
  • Level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System)
  • Adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist

Pricing and Market Position

The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is expected to be priced competitively, with a starting ex-showroom price of around Rs 20 lakh. This positions it directly against key rivals in the fast-growing Indian EV market, including the Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Mahindra BE6.

While the official India launch is anticipated to be on September 3, 2025, the inauguration of the production facility tomorrow signals that the e Vitara is ready to make a significant impact on both the domestic and international automotive scenes.
